CHINA STUDIES PROGRAM

Sinolink Foundation seeks to help two U.S. institutions of higher education establish a China studies program on their campuses.

I. Why Do You Need a China Studies Program?

1. To prepare your students for a global labor market.

According to several world organizations' projections, China will become the largest economy in the world by 2020 in terms of purchasing power or by 2030  in terms of exchange rate.  More and more U.S. companies are doing business in China or with China.  Students with basic knowledge of China will have added competitive edge in securing employment with such companies.  In the past 11 years, Sinolink Foundation sent over 300 Americans to teach English or do internships across China. These participants' life experience in China has contributed to their career success.  Due to their life experience in China, many participants found employment with prestigious international corporations, got admitted into elite graduate programs they did not qualify for before their appointment in China, or started businesses targeting Chinese and American clients in areas of employment service, language training, legal service, etc.
 2. To raise the stature of your institution as a serious player in international education.

3. To promote multiculturalism and interdisciplinary teaching and research at your institution.

4. To offer students a new choice of academic major or minor, thereby increasing student enrollment and  tuition income for your institution.

II.  What Courses to Offer for a China Studies Program

   1.  For a minor program, courses to consider:
(1) Beginning Chinese;
(2) Intermediate Chinese;
(3) Chinese Culture and Society;
(4) Chinese Economy and Business; and
(5) Chinese Politics and Government.
   2.  For a major program, courses to consider:

        Besides the courses for a minor program, other courses to consider:
(1)   U.S. and China Relations;
(2)    Advanced Chinese;
(3)   Chinese Philosophy;
(4)   Chinese History;
(5)   Chinese Media;
(6)   Social Problems in China; and
(7)   Special Topics in China Studies.
 III.  What Sinolink Foundation Can Do to Help?

    1. Sinolink Foundation will appoint and compensate 1-2 members to help your institution plan, create and run a China studies program for the first two years.
    2. Sinolink Foundation will help your institution on curriculum design and faculty recruitment.
    3. Sinolink Foundation will help your institution establish academic exchange relationships with Chinese colleges and universities for further expansion of your China
        studies program in the future.

    4. With pledged donations for this program, Sinolink Foundation will hire and compensate 1-2 adjunct instructors with graduate degrees and teaching experiences at
        the university level to teach up to six China studies courses a year for the first two years under the following conditions:
  • If the class enrollment is not large enough to carry by your institution's standard, Sinolink Foundation will supplement the instructor's income up to full pay and your institution needs to pay partial wage to the instructor by enrollment size; and
  • If the class size meets your institution's requirements, your institution needs to pay the instructor a full wage.
    5. Sinolink Foundation will seek paid internship positions and full-time employment in China and the U.S. for your China studies students.
